Shimon Attie

From 1991 to 1996, American artist Shimon Attie realized a series of remarkable projects across the European continent. Using a variety of media, from on-location slide projection in Berlin's former Jewish quarter to underwater light boxes in Copenhagen's Borsgraven Canal, specters of a long-lost world are brought back to life and shine through the challenges facing us in our world today. Shimon Attie photographs his installations, and it is these extraordinary images that are featured in this book. James Young reflects on these installations and explores the question of how to keep art from usurping the authority of actual historical events. Instead of offering a simple answer, Young finds that Shimon Attie's projects work through the dilemma itself.
