In the Spirit of Martin
Gary Miles Chassman

The companion publication to the major Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition of the same name, In the Spirit of Martin is the first book to demonstrate through visual arts the enduring influence and importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. This landmark volume presents over 130 works of art-- painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, and printmaking-- created by more than 100 visual artists, including Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White, Jacob Lawrence, and Robert Rauschenberg. These artworks are presented alongside a never before published commentary on the life of Dr. King, and explore the ideas and events that served as their inspiration. Among the many contributors are Nikki Giovanni, Julius Lester, and Bernice Johnson Reagon.
